#103 - 🔴 Serial ban for Tiktok and the 4-day week

Greg Taieb · · 6 min read

Publishing a newsletter every week also sometimes means being exposed to blank page syndrome.

Thus, an entire weekend did not allow me to write more than 5 lines on a subject that I had nevertheless selected.

The temptation to procrastinate and "skip a week" crossed my mind but it was not satisfactory.

So I forced myself a little more than usual to start this newsletter (hence its arrival a little later than usual). But always once launched and in a state of "flow" it slides by itself.

On the menu this week:

  • 🔴 Serial ban for Tiktok
  • 😍 The 4-day week told by those who tested it!
  • ⛷️ChatGPT launches its API and it's an avalanche !
  • 🔥 Still new in the “Link in bio”

It's now official, Tiktok is persona non grata on the professional smartphones of members of the commission European.

Announcement followed a few days later by the White House which gives federal employees 30 days to clean up on their devices.

Even if the fears on Tiktok are not new, they are from memory the first time that this has taken the form of such a broad official ban by Western authorities.

The injunction is accompanied by advice to also avoid installing the application on personal devices...even if everyone does what they want at this level.

Is this justified when we continue to use Twitter and Meta applications in Europe? It is debatable.

Is this will it have an impact on the development of TikTok? Probably not in the short term.

Is it of any use? Certainly not.

In fact, it is not enough to delete TikTok from your phone so that none of our data goes to China.

The TikTok development kit (which allows you to interact with the application) is in fact used by tens of thousands of applications (more than 28,000).

What type of interactions are we talking about? It's quite broad but it goes from advertising to publication on the platform.

All types of applications are affected: photo and video applications (Canva, VSCO), games (Fruit Ninja) or even a slew of free utilities whose model is based on the display of advertisements (wifi utilities, weather applications, etc.).

I point out that this is not specific to TikTok, I presented you with this chrome extension which blocked all the "feeds" belonging to Gafa and the least we can say is that the web as we practice it was considerably diminished.

Finally the article reminds us that a global ban on TikTok (even if we are far from it) would amount to creating a dangerous precedent by doing precisely what China is accused of doing with its "great firewall".

>We Found 28,000 Apps Sending TikTok Data. Banning the App Won’t Help.
Banning the TikTok app is like throwing a rock in the Mississippi river and hoping it stops the flow of water. The structure of the internet is designed to share data with anyone who wants it, China or otherwise. A real fix has to look far beyond one company.

😍 The 4-day week told by those who tested it!

We hear a lot of bullshit about the 4-day week... Mainly from people who have positions of principle (for or against for that matter) so when I came across this video of “Welcome to the Jungle” I was very interested.

This French company decided to test the 4-day week in 2019 on a few volunteers (because yes not everyone was keen) and transcribed the experience in a 25-minute film available on YouTube.

We discuss the state of thinking in several countries, the problems that this poses at the beginning in terms of organization and the gains perceived by employees.

continued.

The team will answer all the questions we ask during a live on Linkedin on Tuesday March 14 at 6 p.m. with Camille Fauran, General Director of Welcome to Jungle and Jérémy Clédat, its founder and CEO.

⛷️ChatGPT launches its API and it's an avalanche!

The big news of last week is undoubtedly the launch of the ChatGPT API. Concretely, this means that we will be able to access the full force of this AI from third-party applications.

And that changes everything!

We will therefore see tons of applications taking advantage of the model to offer ever more experiences rich and integrated.

An example? Chatbase which allows you to train ChatGPT on your data!

A pdf? A text file or even a site? No problem, you give the source to chatbase and it offers you a chat window which will search for the answers in your data.

I tested this by connecting the archives of my newsletters and the result is encouraging even if imperfect.

Another example with the book Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari:

This addresses one of the main current problems with ChatGPT: the freshness of information.

Finally, I am convinced that in the same way that ChatGPT redefined what we expected from a search on the web, in the future we will expect the same level of quality in the searches that we do on websites.

Still in the field of AI generation I was rather amazed by what RoomGPT href="https://www.roomgpt.io/" class="kg-image" alt loading="lazy" width="1384" height="548" src="/content/images/2023/03/CleanShot-2023-03-08-at-06.47.06@2x.png" sizes="(min-width: 720px) 720px">

In fact you choose your style, the room you want to arrange and you load a photo and the AI gives you a layout.

We are not yet at the level of what a solution like Rhinov which relies on interior designers and recommends you a shopping list based on your budget, but I want to believe that we will soon have the best of both worlds: the generation of decorations based on products that you can buy with one click.

I've been talking to you about the importance of having a profile page on the internet to centralize your online presence.

In fact, whether or not you publish content online, a "link in bio" type page allows you to control what appears when you type your name on Google and redirect to the right ones resources:

  • your LinkedIn or Instagram profile
  • a calendly link to set up an appointment
  • a contact form

The reason why I'm talking to you about this again (in addition to being the occasion for a "friendly reminder" is that typedream has just released a very modern alternative which manages videos, product pages and lots of other formats more sophisticated than the simple hypertext link.

I recommend really this kind of page for any person or company who wants to take care of their online presence at a minimum.

And that's it for this week!
