#68 - 📱 Mobile figures in France in 2021
Greg Taieb · · 6 min read
Hello, how are you this week?
Me, after having experienced all the waves, I finally got the Covid 🦠. Nothing bad and in any case nothing that prevents me from sharing with you your weekly dose of links and information.
On the menu of this exceptionally long newsletter (thanks to Covid):
- A look back at the last newsletter
- Mobile figures in France in 2021
- How to finally understand Web 3?
- An excellent initiative from the CNIL
- The business of pages bio
About last …week
Before starting a small number: 4.7
This is the rating out of 5 left following the last newsletter. But more than a good grade, what interests me is your feedback and the subjects that interested you. In this case, you wondered quite a bit about the increase in Netflix prices and especially the means of control.
I have some additional details:
- There is already a limit to the number of simultaneous connections depending on the package you have
- The billing that Netflix wishes to introduce will be done when you add a sub-account to your subscription, that is to say an account with a dedicated login and password.
The impact of mobile in France 2021
Okay... Well here's a big piece that arrived late in my list of topics but that I really wanted to share with you this week.
Each year Data.ai publishes an analysis of mobile uses in the world and in the main markets and obviously I was wondering what what it looked like for France.
Already some information on a global scale for 2021:
- 230 billion downloads
- 170 billion spent
- 3.8 trillion hours spent 🙄
- 70% of time spent on a social or photo/video app
Now a little focus on France
Note that most of the stats come from Android which still represents 2/3 of the mobile fleet in France.

Without too many surprises, Gen Z uses Instagram and Snapchat to communicate and the “old” millennials have stayed with Whatsapp and Facebook.

One of the figures that stuck with me was the acceleration in spending on mobile games: $1.4 billion (on a global market of 16 billion) or almost 50% increase compared to 2018 while the number of downloads only increased by 10%. over the same period.

Basically we download less but we invest more money in the games we use.
Another big trend is finance applications which total 5.9 billion downloads. In France there are almost 30% more downloads with almost 60 million downloads. A breakthrough which can be explained by the democratization of crypto and stock market applications.
100 billion hours were spent in 2021 on mobile shopping applications so suffice to say that I was interested to know who the big winners were for France.
A big surprise in the top 5 the #1 application which is Lild Plus the loyalty program application of the hard discount brand. A real tour de force when we know that the application was released in October 2021.
For the rest of the ranking we find in order, AliExpress, Amazon, SHEIN and Vinted.
In terms of streaming, the information to remember is the rise of Disney + which is already catching up with Amazon Prime, released well before. Netflix logically remains well ahead.
In the relatively recent category of fast grocery delivery, if you are wondering which of Getir, Gorillas or Flink is eating up the market, this graph could answer the question:

So be careful, we are in a new market and downloads have been boosted by advertising and promotional codes (a bit like Uber at the beginning) but clearly one player stands out from the crowd: Getir.
The meditation applications which experienced a boom in 2020 continue to make good progress. In France the leader is Petit Bambou and I discovered that the world leader (by a long way) is an application called Calm….simply.
On the social networks side things are moving a lot as one might expect. Time spent explodes ☹️ by almost 50%. We thus go from 200 billion hours spent on social platforms (from mobile, I remind you) in 2021 to 280 billion. It's just crazy and the culprit is obvious: Tiktok.

With its formidable algorithm, its impact on trends and the explosion of downloads, it has become the application of 2021.
Dating applications have never done so well, generating $4 billion (i.e. 2x more than in 2018) even if France seems to have a slightly more contrasting situation with a market which is struggling to return to its pre-crisis level.

Tinder remains the queen application globally even if we observe some disparities from one country to another for the rest of the ranking.
To conclude the top apps 2021 France in downloads, time spent and monthly users:

Unsurprisingly TousAntiCovid and Doctolib have taken over some good places. All we hope is that it won't be the same in 2022 🥳.

🎙️The podcast of the week - web 3: scam or revolution ?
You have certainly already heard of the term Web 3 without really understanding what it is or the enthusiasm that it could generate.
In the last episode of Encore Un Podcast Tech (what do you mean you haven't subscribed yet?) we go over the basics:
- What is the Web 3 (vs. Web 1 and 2)?
- What are its forms and opportunities?
- What are the risks and reservations that we may have?
So here is plenty to bring you up to date for the next discussion at the coffee machine or at the family meal.
👍 The good initiative of the CNIL
I happen to be quite critical with the CNIL but I must admit to having been seduced by their latest prevention initiative: a quiz which raises children's awareness of the issues of privacy on the Internet.

It's fun, well done and educational! My advice? Give this as holiday homework to children and grandparents. You'll kill two birds with one stone.
🤑 The juicy business of bio links
We spoke with Rémi in an episode of the podcast the interest of having a personal page via services such as: linktree, about.me or the excellent lu.ma.
A service that is as simple as it is practical to set up to bring together all your useful links in the same place.
The pioneer of the sector Linktree recently completed a fundraising campaign which valued the service at $1.3 billion.
It must be said that these easy-to-manage pages which can include contact or payment forms are one of the essential building blocks of the business of influencers but also artists.
If you don't yet have your page, go listen to the podcast and here are the platforms that I have tested for you:
- Linktree: The leader. It allows you to embed links, videos and even the newsletter form
- About.me: In addition to the usual functions, allows you to manage appointments
- Taplink: The most complete by far. It allows you to integrate instant messaging, payment forms, etc.
- Lu.ma: My darling. It allows you to manage payments, pages for your events (zoom, clubhouse), registration, etc.
