#88 - Netfix which tells Spotify, the new Kindle and Microsoft vs Google

📺 Netflix tells you the story of ...Spotify

We often talk about its series but Netflix is a mine of quality documentaries.

Next documentary to put on your list: “The Playlist” which will tell the story of Spotify, the leading music streaming platform.

And even if I would have preferred that we were told about Deezer, the trailer promises to tell us an exciting story which will deal with the problems encountered at the launch of the platform:

  • Why pay for music when you could have everything for free by pirating?
  • How to convince the majors and artists?
  • How to prevail against the giants of Silicon Valley when you are Swedish?

It comes out October 13 on Netflix.

🥊 Google vs Microsoft

In the years 2000-2010, it seemed obvious: Google was the company that innovated and Microsoft was the one that failed in everything it tried:

  • In search engines, Google > Bing
  • In browsers, Chrome > Explore
  • In e-mails, Gmail> Outlook
  • In smartphones, Android> Windows Phone

But all that has changed and if we look at the latest duels between the two web giants, it is clear that the picture has completely reversed in recent years.

  • In the Cloud, Microsoft Azure > Google Cloud
  • In the messaging, Teams > at the slew of services launched by Google
  • In Cloud Gaming, Game Pass is a hit while Google has just closed brutally its Stadia alternative

Morality: never bury Microsoft and tell yourself that the leaders and innovators of yesterday are probably not those of tomorrow (the famous innovator's dilemma).

We can see at least 2 explanations:

  • On the Microsoft side the arrival of Satya Nadella as CEO (who came from the cloud)
  • On the Google side, the explanation would be to be found in the culture of promotion at Google which would consist of only promoting people who have released new services, not those who improve existing ones or fix bugs.

This could explain the 83 messaging services and the reason why Gmail is by far no longer the best app emailing….

📘Amazon is trying something with its Kindle

The more I think about it, the more I say to myself that Amazon may have crossed a plateau with its Kindle e-reader.

In fact, although they are the leader in digital e-readers, people who have already tested it are rather convinced and those who prefer it paper book are finding it difficult to take the plunge.

So to convince the undecided Amazon is trying to innovate on this format with the new kindle scribe.

This Kindle XXL has an iPad-sized screen (10.2 inches) with a stylus for writing notes.

At the price level it will cost €369, which is close to the price of an iPad without a stylus but which can do 10 times more things while having excellent note-taking applications.
Besides, I persist, the iPad is the ultimate note-taking tool.

I'm still keeping a close eye on upcoming reviews.

📱What is a super app and why does everyone want theirs?

What do Uber, Lydia, PayPal and Meta have in common?

All these companies dream of becoming a super-app like WeChat or LINE Corp.

But what exactly is a super-app? What are its advantages for the user? And what are the associated risks?

We explain all this to you with Remi in the latest episode of our podcast.

And that's it for this week!
