Every year Data.ai publishes an analysis of mobile uses around the world and in the main markets and of course I wondered what that meant for France.
So here are the top of the most popular mobile applications in France in 2021
Already some information on a global scale for 2021:
- 230 billion downloads
- 170 billion spent
- 3.8 billion hours spent 🙄
- 70% of time spent on a social or photo/video app
What are the most popular applications in France in 2021?
Note that most of the stats come from Android which still represents 2/3 of the mobile fleet in France.

Unsurprisingly, Gen Z uses Instagram and Snapchat to communicate and the “old” millennials have stayed on Whatsapp and Facebook.

Mobile gaming revenues explode in 2021
One of the figures that stood out to me was the acceleration in spending on mobile games: $1.4 billion (in a global market of 16 billion) or almost a 50% increase compared to 2018 while the number of downloads only increased by 10% over the same period.

Basically we download less but we invest more money in the games we use.
Another big trend is finance applications which total 5.9 billion downloads. In France there are almost 30% more downloads with almost 60 million downloads. A breakthrough which can be explained by the democratization of crypto and stock market applications.
What are the most popular shopping apps in France in 2021?
100 billion hours were spent in 2021 on mobile shopping applications, so suffice to say that I was interested to know who the big winners were for France.
A big surprise in the top 5 is the #1 application which is Lidl Plus the application of the loyalty program of the hard discount brand. A real tour de force when we know that the application was released in October 2021.
For the rest of the ranking we find in order, AliExpress, Amazon, SHEIN and Vinted.
What are the most popular streaming applications in France in 2021?
In terms of streaming, the information to remember is the rise of Disney + which is already catching up with Amazon Prime, released well before. Netflix logically remains well ahead.
In the relatively recent category of fast grocery deliveries, if you are wondering which of Getir, Gorillas or Flink is eating up the market, this graph could answer the question:

So be careful, we are in a new market and downloads have been boosted by advertising and promotional codes (a bit like Uber at the beginning) but clearly one player stands out from the crowd: Getir.
What is the most popular meditation application in France in 2021?
The meditation applications which experienced a boom in 2020 continue to make good progress. In France the leader is Petit Bambou and I discovered that the world leader (by far) is an application called Calm….simply.
What are the most popular social networks in France in 2021?
On the social networks side, things are moving a lot, as one might expect. Time spent explodes ☹️ by almost 50%. We thus go from 200 billion hours spent on social platforms (from mobile, I remind you) in 2021 to 280 billion. It's just crazy and the culprit is obvious: Tiktok.

With its formidable algorithm, its impact on trends and the explosion of downloads, it has become the application of 2021.
What are the most popular dating apps in France in 2021?
Dating applications have never done so well, generating $4 billion (i.e. 2x more than in 2018) even if France seems to have a slightly more mixed situation with a market which is struggling to return to its pre-crisis level.

Tinder remains the leading application worldwide even if we observe some disparities from one country to another for the rest of the ranking.
To finish the top apps 2021 France by download, time spent and monthly users:

Unsurprisingly TousAntiCovid and Doctolib have taken over some good places. All we hope is that it won't be the same in 2022 🥳.
