#85 - Watch your passwords, the return of Avatar and an avalanche of podcasts

Hello,
I hope your return to school went well, for my part I'm having a little trouble getting back into the rhythm of this newsletter but we'll keep good habits.
Hopefully you like this recovery program.

🔒The password manager with the ankles fragile

I have spoken to you several times about the good reasons to use a password manager to store access to your favorite sites:

  • generate complex passwords for and different ones for each site
  • not having to memorize them thanks to browser extensions
  • being notified when one of the sites has been compromised

For me, this is an indispensable solution which allows you to no longer never ask the question: what is the password for this site.

But the argument that I often get when I say that all my passwords are stored on the same service is: “yes but if this service is hacked you are screwed”.

In general my answer is: better to use such a service than to have weak passwords shared between several services.

Only, LastPass one of the leaders of the sector made a not too reassuring announcement a few weeks ago announcing that they had been hacked.

More specifically it is the source code of the application which was recovered by smart people.

vulnerabilities.

In short, a real sword of Damocles for users of the service.

A case to be continued but it's almost as scary as if the service had been hacked.

Fortunately the end of the password is coming soon.

🎧The podcasts that you missed this summer

This summer Rémi & I were not idle and we continued to offer you a new episode of our tech podcast.

We did well since we exploded our reading stats.

So if you wanted to update it's right here 👇.

💰The controversial return of Avatar

If you follow the movie news at all, you certainly know that one of the most anticipated film sequels of the last 10 years will soon arrive in our cinemas.

Indeed Avatar, James Cameron's 2009 hit will have a series of sequels, the first of which (The Way of Water) will hit our screens on December 14.

A few days ago you could rewatch Avatar the first of its name on Disney + to refresh your memory. Only those smart people at Disney have temporarily removed the film from their streaming platform to better release it in theaters.

I admit that the news left me with mixed feelings...

It's a good thing because:

  • Avatar was an event in theaters because it launched the fashion for 3D
  • 13 years later, a whole new generation will have the chance to (re)discover this film It's a bad thing because:
  • It's petty on the part of Disney who doesn't care that you're already paying for your streaming service, you have to pay again
  • It's not just a story of big money but also a story of symbols Indeed Avatar remains the biggest success of all time with nearly $2.8 billion raised but a re-release would make it possible to cross the 3 billion mark and that, Disney wouldn't say no.

Well I'm a bit of bad language because the version that comes out will be remastered and in 4K.

And you are going to go back and see Avatar in the cinema?

👌The simplest way to download a video Youtube

It's probably already happened to you: you find a nice or useful video on YouTube and you want to download it.

So yes, you can pay for YouTube premium (€15/month anyway) or you can use online services that do that very well!

That's what I do.

The one I'd like to talk to you about today stands out as it's simple to use and clever.

Imagine that you want to download a Youtube video, for the example I took the audiobook of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck (which I recommend to you by the way).

  1. You take the URL of the video
  2. You remove the “ube” from Youtube
  3. So you get a URL in “yout.com”
  1. You arrive at the download interface which allows you to choose your format
  2. That's all!!

It's so clever that I thought for a moment that it was a real diversion from Youtube but no.

To bookmark urgently!
