Clubhouse review: the social network on the rise

Update (03/01/23): Clubhouse is a hype that hasn't really survived 2021 and even though the app still exists, its features have been copied and integrated into other platforms (notably Twitter) completely cannibalizing the initial application

I was talking to you about it a few weeks ago, Clubhouse is the application that everyone is talking about at the start of 2021. We know that the happy few side (registration by invitation and only on iPhone) sometimes tends to artificially inflate the hype around an application. So I couldn't wait to get my own idea and it's now done since I've been using Clubhouse for 2 weeks now.

It's time to give you a first assessment in this review.

What I like about Clubhouse 👍

  • The format is great: unlike podcasts, Clubhouse offers discussion rooms that are a simple way to exchange “few to many”. A list of speakers exchanges, there are moderators and it is possible to listen or speak by raising your hand. It's quite academic but it works very well. You enter and leave the rooms whenever you want.
  • A caring platform: I think it's linked to the barriers to entry but it must be recognized, Clubhouse is very refreshing. We exchange politely, no clashes, good spirits. It feels like we're back in the early days of social media. Not sure it will last so let's take advantage of it.
  • Good level interventions: For example, I participated one lunchtime in a “room” organized by Xavier Niel during which he answered all the questions asked. They talked about Startups, Ecole 42, entrepreneurship... without filter and in Q&A mode. A proximity that is difficult to reproduce in another form.
  • Closer to Linkedin than to Twitter: On Clubhouse you know who you are talking to. The huge majority of people using their real name, it's rather comforting.

What I like least about Clubhouse 👎

  • The bullshit sellers are (already) there: If like me you are a fan of the bullshit sellers on Linkedin, know that they have already invested in Clubhouse quite intensively seeing it there a new channel to flood the world with their good words. Well, like every social network, the quality of what you see depends on who you follow.
  • It's a potential time sink: Unlike other media, you have to listen to Clubhouse live. No replay available or possibility of accelerated reading (if you knew how much time that saves me on podcasts or YouTube). So you can quickly leave it there for a few hours/days. So far I have been rather resistant.
  • A passive network? I have been going every day for a few minutes for 2 weeks and I have not created any rooms and have never spoken. It may be a question of character, but speaking live is more difficult than writing. Anyone can write a tweet, but not everyone is able to speak in a meeting.

So, I hope this first review was useful to you. I continue to follow the subject and I will certainly share here the first ideas for content that I wish to launch.
